...making a difference together.......

Funding for Tweedstart

TweedStart is the Tweed Foundation’s flagship angling initiative, designed to inspire children to engage with natural history and game angling throughout the legendary Tweed catchment. It particularly focuses on nurturing young anglers, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the art of fishing, and deepening their understanding of the river’s delicate ecosystem. By teaching essential skills, conservation ethics, and the historical significance of the Tweed, TweedStart ensures that future generations remain active stewards of the river, recognizing the vital role of habitat preservation, sustainable fishing practices, and biodiversity in maintaining a thriving salmon population and aquatic environment.

An Homage to the River Tweed

The Tweed Foundation is a charitable organisation dedicated to sustaining and enhancing fish stocks in the River Tweed. Operating under the River Tweed Commission (RTC), it leads the way in scientific, data-driven fisheries management, ensuring conservation efforts are based on research rather than speculation.

Through biological monitoring, habitat restoration, and ecological assessment, the Foundation works to protect the Tweed’s valuable fish stocks and maximise natural productivity. Its population studies, genetic research, and habitat enhancement projects create a thriving environment for wild salmon, trout, and other native species.

As climate change and human activity pose growing challenges, the Foundation’s role is more critical than ever. By combining scientific expertise with strategic conservation, it ensures the Tweed remains one of the world’s most productive salmon rivers for future generations.

At its heart is a step-by-step display, meticulously illustrating the construction of this intricate and revered pattern, tied on a full set of original Harrison Hooks from 1850.

Complementing the flies are tools of the trade from the era—a pair of Sterling Silver hallmarked scissors, once part of a 19th-century fly-tying kit, and a hand vice, an early forerunner of today’s precision tying tools. Adding to its historical gravitas, the frame also features a late 18th-century Magic Lantern Slide of Bemersyde House, a Jock Scott fly tied by Forrest of Kelso circa 1880, and plates from Scrope’s seminal book on fishing the Tweed.

O TWEED! a stranger, that with wand'ring feet
O'er hill and dale has journey'd many a mile,
(If so his weary thoughts he might beguile)
Delighted turns thy beauteous scenes to greet.
The waving branches that romantick bend
O'er thy tall banks, a soothing charm bestow;
The murmurs of thy wand'ring wave below
Seem to his ear the pity of a friend.
Delightful stream! tho' now along thy shore,
When spring returns in all her wonted pride,
The shepherd's distant pipe is heard no more,
Yet here with pensive peace could I abide,
Far from the stormy world's tumultuous roar,
To muse upon thy banks at eventide.
